Why Koh Chang Is My Favorite Island in Thailand

People often ask me why I keep going back to Koh Chang.

Thailand has many places that are more visually spectacular—Krabi, Phuket, Phi Phi Islands, Koh Lipe, and many others. The Andaman Sea is famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs rising out of crystal-clear turquoise water, hidden lagoons, white sandy beaches, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. They're the kind of places that leave you speechless, and everyone should experience them at least once.

But after you've seen the beaches, taken the photos, and admired the scenery, you're still just another tourist. You can return every year and still feel like a visitor. You enjoy the place, but you don't really become part of it.

Koh Chang is different.

You go there once, and before you know it, you've made friends from all over the world. Then you can't wait to go back—not only because of the island, but because your friends are there.

You may go out by yourself, but within minutes you'll be surrounded by familiar faces. Someone sends a message saying a DJ is playing somewhere, everyone gets together, and suddenly it's another unforgettable night. The longer you stay, the more people you meet, and the more friendships you build. What was supposed to be a one-week vacation often turns into a month.

After a while, you know the bartenders, the DJs, the dive instructors, the musicians, the business owners, and travelers who return every year. Christmas, New Year's, birthdays, sunsets, dinners, and parties become traditions shared with the same group of friends.
